Bowenwork for Animals
-
Bowenwork is a healing modality developed in the 1950s by the late Thomas Bowen of Australia.
Through a series of gentle moves over specific muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, Bowenwork initiates relaxation and rebalance in the autonomic nervous system. The result can be improved function, reduced pain, lymphatic drainage, improved circulation, myofascial release, and elimination of toxins.
A typical session lasts approximately 45-60 minutes.
Bowenwork can feel like a gentle pressure or a massage move, and after every few maneuvers the practitioner steps out to allow the client’s body to process the work. It is very gentle and appropriate for any animal.

Other modalities such as chiropractic and massage should be avoided for five days prior to and after Bowenwork. Maria is a firm believer in these as well, but each needs its own time and space to work effectively within the body.
The first session will be approximately 15 minutes longer (plan on about 75 minutes) so Maria can review your animal's medical history, assess mobility restrictions, and collaborate with you on a plan. Subsequent sessions will typically be 45-60 minutes.
Bowenwork facilitates lymphatic drainage and detoxification, and hydrates the fascia, which means your animal will be craving water!
Bowenwork feels like very gentle, small massage moves that are performed over targeted points on the body. While there are common moves to restore balance to the body that may be performed regularly, there will also be specific procedures used for each individual’s plan.
How many sessions your animal will need depends on the severity of their condition and how long they have experienced limitations. Recent injuries may be improved after just one session, whereas chronic conditions may require more sessions.
Tom Bowen, the developer of Bowenwork, helped tens of thousands of people. According to his records, more than 85% of his clients’ conditions resolved. Maria is excited about the results she has seen and healing people and animals is very rewarding for her. However, there are no guarantees, and as she says, “the worst case scenario is that we will ONLY achieve some relaxation.”
