Bowenwork

  • Bowenwork is a healing modality developed in the 1950s by the late Thomas Bowen of Australia.

Through a series of gentle moves over specific muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, Bowenwork initiates relaxation and rebalance in the autonomic nervous system. The result can be improved function, reduced pain, lymphatic drainage, improved circulation, myofascial release, and elimination of toxins.

A typical session lasts approximately 45-60 minutes and is performed over lightweight clothing, usually on a massage table.

Bowenwork can feel like a gentle pressure or a massage move, and after every few maneuvers the practitioner steps out to allow the client’s body to process the work. It is very gentle and appropriate for any age, from newborns through the elderly.

    And more...

  • Other modalities such as chiropractic and massage should be avoided for five days prior to and after Bowenwork. Maria is a firm believer in these as well, but each needs its own time and space to work effectively within the body.

The first session will be approximately 15 minutes longer (plan on about 75 minutes) so Maria can review your medical history, assess mobility restrictions, and collaborate with you on a plan. Subsequent sessions will typically be 45-60 minutes.

An ideal outfit is something you would wear to a yoga or exercise class. Bowenwork is performed over a light layer of clothing such as a t-shirt or leggings, but can also be performed directly on skin (especially when working on the knee, ankle, neck, or forearm).

Bring a water bottle - you will be thirsty after the session. Bowenwork facilitates lymphatic drainage and detoxification, and hydrates the fascia, which means your body will be craving water!

Bowenwork feels like very gentle, small massage moves that are performed over targeted points on the body. While there are common moves to restore balance to the body that may be performed regularly, there will also be specific procedures used for each individual’s plan.

How many sessions you will need depends on the severity of your condition and how long you have experienced limitations. For example, if you sprained your ankle a few days before your first session, you may feel relief very quickly and only require a couple of visits. Conversely, if you have had chronic pain for years, you may not notice an immediate difference. Also, the body prioritizes healing based on its own needs; for example, organ function will usually be optimized first. You may not notice that your kidneys, liver, heart, or brain is functioning better the way you would notice knee pain resolving.

Tom Bowen, the developer of Bowenwork, helped tens of thousands of people. According to his records, more than 85% of his clients’ conditions resolved. Maria is excited about the results she has seen and healing people is very rewarding for her. However, there are no guarantees, and as she says, “the worst case scenario is that you will ONLY achieve some relaxation.”
